Birmingham City University is a successful and flourishing University, providing over 300 courses to more than 23,000 students from eight faculties and seven campuses.

History

Birmingham City University's roots stretch back to 1843 with the founding of the Polytechnic Institute and the Birmingham School of Design. Over the next hundred years Schools of Jewellery, Music, Commerce, Art, Education, Architecture, Physical Education and Technology sprang up and were re-established in and around the city. In 1971 those Schools joined to form the new City of Birmingham Polytechnic, which in 1989 was established as an independent corporation with exempt charitable status. University status was conferred in 1992, and as the new Birmingham City University the university continued to develop. The University has strong links with the local community and retains close ties with Birmingham City Council with the annual inauguration of the Lord Mayor of Birmingham as the University’s Chancellor.

Learning and Teaching – the University’s Mission

Birmingham City University has received strong endorsements for the quality of its teaching provision, including an excellent report from the HEFCE internal audit service. It received its best ratings in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise and a highly supportive report from the Quality Assurance Agency on its management of educational provision.

The University serves a diverse range of students, including at present, students from over 80 countries outside the EU, with significant numbers from the Far East, Africa and the Indian sub-continent. Birmingham City University aims to give them all a learning experience of the highest quality and is committed to investing in research and teaching. It views this international dimension as an important strength benefiting both students and staff.
